What's Happening

Hello, San Diego!

A bit of a dip in events in the next two weeks, but it looks like things will pick up after that.

The San Diego Jewish Film Festival gets underway at the JCC on Saturday. The Italian film Liliana will screen next week at La Paloma.

Music and dance concerts and events include the Trade Roots Reggae 40th Anniversary Show at the Holding Company tonight, Luis Angel 'El Flaco' y Julio Preciado at the Civic Theatre (also tonight), Korean singer Im Chang Jung at Pechanga on Saturday, and Flamenco Intimo at Charade Speakeasy on Sunday. Next Thursday, the  San Diego Jewish Men's Choir Carnegie Hall Preview Concert will take place at Oasis. Also, next Thursday, the Mayrig concert at the UCSD Loft will feature Armenian music. Next Friday features lots of music and dance with the final Villa-Lobos Festival Concert at the Coronado Library, the Majesty of the Blues concert at Point Loma Nazarene, Irish music band Four Shillings at the Hall of Nations, and the Sol Invictus dance concert at Balboa Theatre featuring urban dance movements, capoeira, and martial arts.

Other notable events include the Hidden Little Italy talk at St Joseph's Cathedral on Saturday, a talk on Sunday at the Timken regarding Sofonisba Anguissola, Portraiture, & the Art of the Gesture, and the ongoing Monty Python’s Edukational Show at Mission Valley Mall, which wraps up on Sunday.

Lastly, the Worldview Project, which produces this newsletter every week (and does lots of other stuff too!), is a non-profit organization. Supporting cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and engagement has never been more critical than it is now. As you may have noticed, we don't annoy you with advertisements or constant fundraising appeals. But we need your support to continue to do what we do. In particular, we are seeking our readers' help in funding the further development of our Cultures in the Classroom™ curriculum project to inspire children to connect with and appreciate the wonder of cultures around the world. You can show your support by clicking on the "Donate to the WVP" button above and making a tax-deductible donation to the WVP. No donation is too small— even a dollar would be appreciated!

Recipe of the Month

Our recipe of the month is for Gulai Ayam Padang. A creamy, savory, and absolutely delicious chicken curry from West Sumatra, Indonesia!

CD of the Month

This Month's Music Selection is the eponymous-titled Nusantara Beats. The six-piece band hailing from Amsterdam is quickly becoming a must-see act. With a deep connection to their Indonesian roots and a passion for honoring their cultural heritage, Nusantara Beat brings a fresh and modern take on traditional Indonesian music. Nusantara Beat creates a unique sound that blends traditional Indonesian songs from the 20th century with their own style and creativity. The result is a mesmerising mix of tropical and mystical sounds that take the audience on a journey to the land of their ancestors.—Amazon

The Malay/Indonesian word "Nusantara" refers to the Malay/Indonesian archipelago. It is also the name for the new capitol of Indonesia!

Book of the Month

Our Book of the Month is Heart Lamp by Banu Mushtaq.

In the twelve stories of Heart Lamp, Banu Mushtaq exquisitely captures the everyday lives of women and girls in Muslim communities in southern India. Published originally in the Kannada language between 1990 and 2023, praised for their dry and gentle humor, these portraits of family and community tensions testify to Mushtaq’s years as a journalist and lawyer, in which she tirelessly championed women’s rights and protested all forms of caste and religious oppression.
